Singapore HDB Service Fees Now Cover Neighbour’s Condo Maintenance
The Ministry of Housing and Development (MHD) has announced a radical, yet entirely unsurprising, overhaul to the controversial Service and Conservancy Charges (S&CC) for public housing estates. Effective immediately, the S&CC fee structure will no longer be tiered by flat size, but by 'Aspirational Square Footage.'
Under the new system, residents of a standard 4-room HDB flat will now be billed for the maintenance of their neighbours' executive condos, plus a mandatory ‘Future Wealth Contribution’ fee.
“We must foster a culture of shared ambition,” stated a Ministry spokesperson. “If you cannot afford the lifestyle, you must pay for the infrastructure that enables others to achieve it.”
One resident, Mdm Tan, was apoplectic. “*Aiyo, what is this nonsense? Last time the lift spoil, we pay for lift only. Now must pay for the condo swimming pool cleaning also? Must be joke, right?*”
The MHD insists this is crucial for maintaining Singapore’s ‘World-Class Shared Dreamscape.’ Non-payment will result in the government issuing residents a small, symbolic plot of land in Tuas, payable immediately via outstanding S&CC arrears.
