Singapore High-SES Elites Pay $450 To Ruin $5 Hawker Dishes In Cooking Class
Wealthy Singaporeans are flocking to "The Pretentious Ladle" to pay $450 for the privilege of sweating over a stove for three hours.
The course teaches "artisanal deconstructed Laksa" to people whose only culinary experience involves shouting instructions at their domestic helper.
Lead instructor Julian Tan claims that adding imported truffle oil compensates for a complete lack of soul.
"Wah lau, I pay so much to cut onion until cry, then the result taste like longkang water," said participant Cheryl Lim while Instagramming her charred prawns.
Participants wear designer aprons that cost more than a hawker's monthly rent.
The session concludes with students eating their mistakes while pretending the "smoky aroma" isn't just the smell of expensive failure.
"Actually hor, my maid do better, but at least now I can say I am 'cultural' mah," Lim added.
